1981–2025: 44 years of theatrical research – Acting School

The Accademia Internazionale di Teatro is among the most prestigious Italian acting schools, recognized by the MUR (AFAM), based in Rome and oriented toward professional acting training. Founded in Paris in 1981, the Circo a Vapore Company has its roots in a crossroads of avant-garde European artistic experiencesthat fueled intense creative ferment at the end of the 1970s.

After moving to Rome in 1982, the Company established itself on the international stage with a rich body of productions presented at festivals and showcases in France, Spain, England, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, San Marino, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the United States, South Korea, Panama, Thailand, Malaysia.

In 1984, the International School of Theatre was founded, dedicated to the art of acting and to research on the vocal, physical, and visual languages of the contemporary stage.

Pedagogy and creation merge, giving life to an approach to acting that is vibrant, receptive, and strongly connected to the global stage.

Over time, the School has obtained several official recognitions, demonstrating the value of its pedagogical activity:

  • Since 1990: Authorization by the Lazio Region to issue the qualifications of Actor, Assistant Director, and Director
  • Since 2016: Authorization by the Ministry of University and Research to issue the First-Level Academic Diploma in Acting, equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree (D.M. 251/16), becoming the Accademia Internazionale di Teatro

In 2025, the Circo a Vapore Company took part in the “Aria” Festival in Antrodoco (RI) and the “Neiborghi” Festival in Cittàducale (RI) with the show “Funambules”, also performed in February during a tour across Central Italy, in Marche and Tuscany.

From April 24 to May 4 and from June 14 to June 27, 2025, the Spring Festival, sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Waste Cycle of the City of Rome, took place at San Gregorio al Celio Park, along with the 44th edition of the Summer Festival at the Teatro Anfitrione.

With the new productions “Shakespeare&Chef” and “Imaginarium”, the Company and the Academy will be guests of the Mirabilia Festival 2025 in Cuneo.

For the A.Y. 2025–2026, the allocation of 5 Partial Scholarships for students belonging to the 1st and 2nd income brackets (ISE indicator) is once again confirmed.

2024

2024 saw the Circo a Vapore Company take part in the Fano Carnival celebrations with the production “Sinfonia Clown”, also staged in May during the Central Italy tour in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.

From April 23 to May 4 and from June 15 to June 27, 2024, the Spring Festival, sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Waste Cycle of the City of Rome, took place at San Gregorio al Celio Park, along with the 43rd edition of the Summer Festival at the Teatro Anfitrione.

With “Funambules”, the Company toured throughout July in Avignon, appearing at the prestigious “Avignon Off Festival”, and again took center stage—with the Academy students—at “Mirabilia on the road” in Busca and at the Mirabilia Festival 2024 in Cuneo.

With the resumption of teaching activities for A.Y. 2024–2025, the allocation of 5 Partial Scholarships for students belonging to the 1st and 2nd income brackets (ISE indicator) was once again confirmed.

In 2023 several exchanges took place with the Academy’s European partners: with the Accion Escena School in Madrid, part of the RIEA Network, and with AIDAS in Versailles.

In March, the Circo a Vapore Company was invited to perform “Clown Bistrot” at the “Favole di Gusto” festival in Gaeta.

From April 22 to May 1 and from June 15 to 27, 2023, the Spring Festival and the Summer Festival were held.

In the same year, the Association produced: “Clown Story” and “Sinfonia Clown”, written and directed by S. Marcotullio, and “The Minotaur”, written and directed by F. Bianconi.

In December, the Company won the 2023 Regional Live Performance Call from the Lazio Region.

For A.Y. 2022–2023, the allocation of 5 Partial Scholarships was planned for students belonging to the 1st and 2nd income brackets.

From April 24 to May 1 and from June 15 to 27, 2022, the Spring Festival and the Summer Festival were held.

In May, the summer tour began with the show “Red and White”, which would be presented at the Mirabilia Festival (Cuneo) and at the Festival of Mediterranean Art Theatres in Formia.

Regarding pedagogical exchanges, the Academy launched projects with several institutions: the Stuttgart Company “Dundu”, AIDAS in Versailles, Theater Titanick, and TIDA Teatro in Aosta.

For A.Y. 2020–2021, 5 Partial Scholarships were again awarded to students in the 1st and 2nd income brackets.

In November 2020, an agreement was signed between the Accademia Internazionale di Teatro and the Accademia Albertina in Turin.

On January 15, 2021, the Ministry of Education approved a change to the Educational Regulations to extend core subjects to two and three years in the First-Level Academic Diploma program.

From April 23 to May 8, 2021, and from June 18 to 27, 2021, the Spring Festival and the Summer Festival took place.

The Academy participated in and won the Regional Call: “Ripartiamo – Cultural Animation”, staging three productions with the Circo a Vapore Company.

2020

From January 12 to February 12, 2020, an exchange took place between the Accademia Internazionale di Teatro and the Escola Profissional das Artes of Madeira (Portugal).

For the 2019/2020 Pomezia Theatre Season, the Academy’s young actors presented the show “The Changing Forms of Love”.

From May 29 to June 14, 2020, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Spring Festival was presented online.

On July 23, 2020, the National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System (ANVUR) expressed a positive opinion regarding the maintenance of the requirements necessary for accreditation.

From March 24 to 31, an exchange was held between the 3rd-year Academy students and the British company Lost In Translation Circus.

From April 24 to May 1, 2019, the Spring Festival took place in San Gregorio al Celio Park, under the patronage of the 1st Municipality of the City of Rome.

From May 31 to June 2, an exchange took place between the Academy’s 3rd year and the German company Theater Titanick.

A collaboration was established with the Teatro Eliseo for the production of “Beyond the Wall”.

From April 24 to May 1, 2018, the San Gregorio Spring Festival was held, under the patronage of the 1st Municipality of the City of Rome.

For the 2018/2019 Pomezia Theatre Season, the Company presented the show “The Dark Side of Farce”.

Students of the A.I.T. can apply for the scholarship call published by Laziodisu.

A collaboration was initiated between the Academy and Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Art History and Performing Arts.

From March 31 to April 9, 2017, the San Gregorio Spring Festival took place at both of the Academy’s venues.

The Festival hosted a production by the Accion Escena Academy of Madrid, included within the exchange program of the R.I.E.A. network.

On April 19, 2016, the Ministry of University and Research (MIUR), by Ministerial Decree No. 251, authorized the Academy to issue the title of First-Level Academic Diploma in Acting (DADPL02).

For A.Y. 2016–2017, 5 Scholarships were funded and awarded to students based on excellence.

For A.Y. 2015–2016, 10 Scholarships were established and awarded to the most deserving students.

The Lazio Region renewed accreditation for the Academy’s teaching rooms.

From April 25 to May 3, 2015, the San Gregorio al Celio Spring Festival was held with over 60 performances.

The Academy joined R.I.E.A. (the Ibero-American Network of Schools for Actors).

The Lazio Region authorized the issuance of the professional qualification of “Director”.

From March 30 to April 5, 2014, the historic San Gregorio al Celio Spring Festival was held, inaugurated in 1986.

On July 2, 2014, the ANVUR Governing Board expressed a positive opinion regarding the accreditation application to the MIUR.

For A.Y. 2013–2014, the Department of Labor of the Province of Rome funded 10 Scholarships.

The Lazio Region accredited the Academy’s teaching rooms: Aula A Centro Latina, Aula B Centro Latina, Aula A Centro Circo Massimo, Aula B Centro Circo Massimo.

Following the accreditation application to the MIUR, the School changed its registered name, becoming the “Accademia Internazionale di Teatro”.

The Academy expanded its facilities by acquiring the “Latina” Teaching Center with two classrooms equipped for teaching, a theatre hall, and a costume room.

On 24/06/2011, the Department of Youth Policies of the Province of Rome funded 10 scholarships for students of the International School of Theatre.

Following regulations on the “European Actor Training Programs”, the School established a new Educational Ordinance starting from A.Y. 2008–2009.

From this year and until 2012, in collaboration with the City of Rome, the Emerging Theatre Festival and the European Theatre Review were organized.

The City of Rome granted the “International School of Theatre” the premises of the “Circo Massimo” Theatre Center within the San Gregorio al Celio Park, equipped for teaching and the practice of theatre workshops.

The San Gregorio Multipurpose Cultural Center was established and is still active today.
